I am going to attempt to run a marathon

Posted by oddlyoptimistic under: Uncategorized.

Right now, I’ve been getting in about 2 miles on the treadmill usually about 2-3 times a week. But since I am a college student with papers and midterms, I haven’t been completely faithful.

I want to work myself up to the March 2009 Marathon. My university has a marathon training club that starts up in October but I want to train by myself until then. I’m thinking about continuing to run on the treadmill until summer. I want to do between 2-3 miles. Come summer the goal is to move outside. By the end of summer, I want to be able to run 5 miles without getting too tired.

The only issue is I broke a bone in my foot about a year and a couple of months ago. I got cleared by my doctor and everything to run a marathon; however, he did say if the pain continues and doesn’t recover soon, I have to stop. I know I have to be careful about shoes. The doctor suggested I go to New Balance and get a pair of shoes for training. He also gave me this special gel that I could also use if there is pain. Usually, my foot hurts a little when I run but not too much. Then, when I get out of my shoes with their inserts, it hurts a little but I can bounce back.

I’m a little concerned that I’ll train and then closer to March 2009 I will have to stop because of my foot. Any suggestions on dealing with foot injuries and such will be helpful.

Welcome! I am a running coach and someone who has suffered injuries. I suggest proceeding very slowly with increasing your mileage. You don’t want to keep running if you aren’t completely healed. Keep checking with your sports doctor. Make sure that you aren’t doing too much too soon. You’ll get there with patience.
