let me be the first to encourage you to go for a half hour at a minimum. i am truly proud of you for rocking 2 miles . . . but to hit a marathon, you must go further. when you’re ready to run the LA mara, 16 miles will probably be your long run, and 10 miles will be “what? give me something hard!” to you i recommend that you work toward your goal more aggressively. just my take on things . . . and i AM pretty intense, so take it however you would like.

I saw your post on your being a toe first runner. I’m that way too. I do not compete, and I do not do really long distances (which means anything I say is probably not of much use!). But this is the most comfortable stride for me. Most of my running is trail running, so I suspect that the technical needs of the trail have formed this technique.

Breathing technique: When I ran a lot (for me) some years ago, I developed a couple of breathing patterns that were right for my body and in a synchopation with my stride that helped me get through the tougher parts of my run (again, on hills etc). I eventually started labelling it my “breathing meditation” because I focused on my breath, and that helped me breathe through my running labor! (Lamaze for running).

Funny, after the passage of all of those years, my body immediately recalled those breathing techniques. One technique for the most intensive part of my run was this: Two fast, 1/2 capacity breaths in through the nose and and two forceful 1/2 capacity exhales out through the mouth. That breathing always made me feel that I was turning over the oxygen in my body efficiently.
